The driver who was going the wrong way on Interstate 95 and caused the death of Endicott College police Sgt. Jeremy Cole is expected to face criminal charges in New Hampshire. The driver’s name and age have not been released yet, but authorities say more information and charges will come soon.

A memorial gathering for Sgt. Cole was held Monday morning at Endicott College. On the night before Thanksgiving, while driving home after his shift, Cole, 49, was hit head-on by the wrong-way driver in Newbury, Massachusetts. Cole had worked at Endicott College for 15 years and was well-loved by his colleagues, known as J.Cole. A GoFundMe raised over $93,000 for his wife and four children.

The driver of the Tesla involved in the crash is in his 40s and from southeastern Massachusetts. He was seriously injured and was flown to a hospital in Boston. Police said he will face charges soon. The crash is still being investigated by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

On the evening of November 27, New Hampshire State Police reported the Tesla driving south on the wrong side of I-95 around 11:45 p.m. Massachusetts and New Hampshire police tried to stop the driver, even setting up a tire-deflation device.

Before they could use it, the Tesla hit Cole, who was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the highway was shut down for several hours.

Police are continuing to investigate and have expressed condolences to Cole’s family and coworkers.
