The Wisconsin Senate race between Republican Eric Hovde and incumbent Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin is heating up as the two prepare for their first debate on Friday. With Hovde closing in on Baldwin’s lead, the contest has become one of the most competitive Senate races this election cycle.

Polling shows that Baldwin’s once-comfortable lead has shrunk significantly, with some internal polls even suggesting a tie. The Cook Political Report has now classified the race as a toss-up, and major Republican groups, including the Senate Leadership Fund, have poured millions into supporting Hovde.

Hovde, a Madison-area businessman who previously lost a Senate bid in 2012, has benefited from significant self-funding and Trump’s endorsement. His campaign is focusing on painting Baldwin as a career politician, while Baldwin’s camp is framing Hovde as out of touch with Wisconsin voters, citing his California business ties.

The upcoming debate is expected to focus on key national issues such as the economy, immigration, and reproductive rights. As both candidates fight for last-minute momentum, the outcome of this race could have significant implications for control of the U.S. Senate, with Republicans needing just two more seats to secure a majority.

Observers predict that any debate missteps could be heavily amplified in the final days of the campaign, especially in a state known for its razor-thin election outcomes.
