A shocking incident in South Carolina has left a community reeling after 41-year-old J. Ray was charged with the murder of her husband, 43-year-old G. Baughman.
Authorities say Ray shot Baughman multiple times in the back at their home, pointing to serious issues in their marriage.
The sheriff’s office received a call about the incident around 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 2024. When officers arrived, they found Ray walking from the backyard to the front of the house. She was immediately detained. Inside the home, deputies found Baughman unresponsive on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.
A black handgun was discovered on the kitchen counter, along with spent bullet casings nearby. Baughman was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:30 p.m., and an autopsy has been scheduled.
Court documents reveal disturbing details. Ray allegedly shot Baughman several times in the back and continued firing after he fell to the floor. Investigators believe the attack was planned, citing evidence of malice aforethought.
While the motive remains unclear, officials confirmed the couple was going through a separation. They had been apart since August 2024, and Baughman filed for divorce in November. The divorce papers, served to Ray on November 9, included requests to protect marital assets and a “no adverse contact” order.
Ray’s attorney argued she was a victim of domestic abuse. In court, it was revealed that Ray had been hospitalized the previous month for injuries allegedly caused by Baughman. However, Ray had declined to press charges, reportedly to protect his career in the Marines.
The couple co-owned a veterinary hospital, which has vowed to remain operational and continue serving the community despite the tragedy.
Ray is currently in custody without bond and has been ordered not to contact Baughman’s family. Her next court date is set for March 14, 2025.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the hidden struggles many face in their personal relationships. As the community grieves, they hope for justice and healing for all those affected.
