Oregon lawmakers recently held their first legislative hearing addressing the controversy over the mistaken addition of 1,259 noncitizens to the voter rolls, which was uncovered by the Secretary of State’s office and the Department of Transportation ODOT.
Ten of these individuals cast ballots. Officials emphasized that the issue had been corrected and reassured that it wouldn’t affect the outcome of any past or upcoming elections, including in 2024.
The error occurred when DMV staff accidentally selected the wrong option from a drop-down menu of identifying documents.
The issue arose after Oregon began allowing noncitizens to apply for driver licenses in 2021.
During the hearing, ODOT clarified that a full review of about 1.4 million licenses and ID cards issued since the policy’s enactment had been conducted. REAL ID licenses were unaffected due to a separate federal verification process.
