A man from New York faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing trouble on a plane. His actions forced the plane to make an unexpected landing in Richmond, Virginia, last spring.
James Tyqwon Ford, 31, was traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to New York on May 13, 2023, when he became disruptive and made threats. Before the flight’s first drink service, flight attendants smelled alcohol and reminded passengers that bringing their own alcohol on board was not allowed. Ford became rude and cursed at the crew, ignoring their warnings.
When a flight attendant told him his behavior was unacceptable and that law enforcement would be called when they landed, Ford responded with offensive comments, saying the police would have to catch him first.
Later, he threatened to punch and shoot another crew member. Passengers reported his behavior, saying they felt unsafe as he made threats, including claiming he had a gun and saying he would “tear the plane apart.” Ford also argued with his wife, leading to another altercation, which other passengers had to break up.
Because of Ford’s actions, the flight was rerouted to Richmond instead of New York. When the plane landed, authorities met the flight and removed Ford.
Ford pled guilty to interfering with the flight crew and will be sentenced on April 2, 2025. He faces up to 20 years in prison, though sentences for federal crimes are often shorter than the maximum.
