Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen believes it’s time to raise sales taxes to help fund state government and address budget shortages.
On his monthly radio show, the Governor pointed to South Dakota as an example of how Nebraska could lower property taxes.
He mentioned that South Dakota doesn’t have an income tax and has relatively low property taxes, but it raises revenue through higher sales taxes, including taxes on many products.
Pillen suggested Nebraska should follow a similar path, focusing on raising money through sales taxes while lowering property taxes.
He also expressed interest in increasing sin taxes, such as those on cigarettes, to help boost state revenue.
