It’s a sad day for the music world as J.D. Souther, a legendary singer songwriter, has passed away at 78. Known for penning some of the Eagles’ biggest hits like Best of My Love, New Kid in Town, and Heartache Tonight, Souther’s contributions to rock and country music were profound.
His close partnership with Eagles’ Glenn Frey helped shape the Southern California sound that dominated the 1970s.
In addition to his songwriting, Souther had a successful solo career, with hits like You’re Only Lonely” and the duet Her Town Too with James Taylor.
His collaborations with Linda Ronstadt, both musically and personally, were pivotal in his career. Souther also made memorable appearances in film and TV, notably in Thirtysomething and Nashville.
A Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Souther’s influence spanned generations, inspiring countless musicians. He is survived by his sisters, ex-wife, and her daughter, as well as his beloved dogs, Layla and Bob.
His family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Best Friends Animal Society, a cause close to his heart.
