Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse, a Kansas City restaurant that has been serving customers since 1938, was recently named one of the “most legendary steakhouses in the South” by Southern Living magazine.

Although Kansas City is usually considered part of the Midwest, Jess & Jim’s was one of 30 steakhouses highlighted by the magazine. The others were from states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama.

Located at 517 E. 135th St. in South Kansas City, Jess & Jim’s offers a variety of dishes including strip steak, ribeye, steak burgers, and boneless chicken sandwiches.

The magazine praised the restaurant, noting, “Find the black bull in the sky and you’ve found Jess & Jim’s,” referring to the bull statue on top of the building. Today, the iconic steakhouse is run by its fourth-generation owners.

In 2015, USA Today readers voted Jess & Jim’s one of the 10 best steakhouses in the country, and the same year, Huff Post included it in their list of the 50 best steakhouses.

Last year, Southern Living also named Baba’s Pantry, a Kansas City Palestinian deli, as one of the 25 best new restaurants in the South.
