RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Devin Javonne Wilson, 29, an inmate at Lieber Correctional Institution, died Monday following a fight among inmates in a common area of their housing unit. Wilson was stabbed during the altercation and succumbed to his injuries at the prison.
Three other inmates sustained what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital, according to Chrysti Shain, director of communications for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections Inspector General’s office is investigating Wilson’s death as a suspected homicide, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Crime Scene unit and the Dorchester County Coroner.
Wilson had been incarcerated since August 2017 on charges of second-degree burglary and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. His record includes a previous escape attempt in December 2021 and multiple disciplinary sanctions. He was projected to be released in January 2028.
