Delaware has launched a new registration system aimed at encouraging mentoring throughout the state, with the goal of simplifying the process for prospective mentors. The initiative will feature eight kiosks positioned across Delaware, where individuals can obtain background checks, which will be funded by the state for the first 2,000 applicants, as stated by Department of Education Secretary Mark Holodick.

Once cleared, mentors will undergo a one-hour online training session provided by Connecting Generations. Holodick emphasized the program’s potential, particularly in urban areas like Wilmington, where local businesses can partner with schools to enhance mentoring efforts. He noted that research shows mentoring programs involving groups from companies tend to be more effective and sustainable.

Additionally, the state is encouraging various agencies to engage in mentoring relationships with students, incorporating a focus on early literacy. Holodick highlighted that mentors are crucial not only for addressing students’ social and emotional challenges but also for supporting their academic growth, especially in literacy skills.

This initiative is the result of collaboration among the Department of Education, Governor John Carney, state legislators, the Department of Human Resources, and the Mentoring Task Force, aiming to create a robust support system for students across Delaware.
