The head of Washington’s Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), Secretary Hunter, announced his decision to step down when the next governor is elected, following increasing calls for his resignation amidst multiple crises within the agency.
In a video message to staff, Hunter expressed that he did not wish to seek reappointment, citing a desire to allow the incoming governor to establish their own vision for the agency.
Hunter’s announcement comes after significant challenges faced by DCYF, particularly concerning overcrowding and crises at facilities like Green Hill, a youth detention center. Reports indicated that the agency had exceeded its safe operational capacity for over a year, leading to difficulties in accommodating young offenders.
The situation has been further complicated by recent lawsuits and controversies related to the treatment of young inmates.
Despite the negative attention, DCYF highlighted several accomplishments during Hunter’s tenure, including reduced caseloads for child welfare workers and improved access to services for youth transitioning out of foster care.
Hunter stated his commitment to remain with the agency until the end of his appointment, ensuring a smooth transition for the next administration.
