California has reached a major milestone, exceeding 2 million zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales, a testament to its leadership in clean transportation, according to Governor Gavin Newsom’s office. This achievement comes just two years after the state celebrated its 1 millionth ZEV sale, reflecting rapid growth in adoption.

Governor Newsom reaffirmed his commitment to clean transportation by proposing the revival of California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program CVRP.

The program, which was phased out in 2023, had supported over 594,000 vehicles and helped save an estimated 456 million gallons of fuel. Newsom suggested funding the rebates through the state’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, particularly if federal ZEV tax credits are eliminated.

To sustain the growing ZEV market, California is heavily investing in infrastructure, boasting 150,000 public chargers statewide. Additionally, $81.7 million in federal funding has been approved for ZEV projects slated for 2025.

Currently, California leads the nation, accounting for 30.3% of all U.S. ZEV sales. These efforts underscore the state’s commitment to accelerating the shift to cleaner, more sustainable transportation.
