The Brandywine Valley SPCA BVSPCA and its affiliates are ramping up adoption efforts in the wake of Hurricane Milton. With shelters working to accommodate rescue animals from affected areas, they have waived adoption fees for adult cats and large adult dogs to encourage local adoption.

One Delaware location recently received more than two dozen cats from a Florida shelter that was hit by a tornado during the storm.

BVSPCA’s Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, Sara Smith, emphasized the importance of adopting animals locally to create space for those in need of rescue.

Smith explained that every animal adopted helps open up space for another shelter animal to be relocated from the disaster zones.

Many animals were moved to free up resources for emergency responders focusing on recovery efforts in the south.

Smith also stressed the urgent need for support, whether through adoptions, fostering, volunteering, or donations, as shelters are overwhelmed following the storm.
