Scammers are sending fake notices to local business owners in Washington, pretending to be from a state agency. Secretary of State Steve Hobbs is warning residents not to trust these messages.

The fake notices ask business owners to register, verify their business, or make annual filings, often asking for money that is much higher than the state’s usual fees. Some phone calls are specifically targeting Latino business owners, threatening fines and jail unless they immediately pay $200.

“Businesses are key to Washington’s economy, and owners should feel safe from these scams,” Hobbs said.

The Secretary of State’s office manages state elections and handles the registration of businesses and charities, among other tasks.
