The look on Chloe Philgreen’s face could only be described as one of intense concentration.

As four of her friends whirled jump ropes in a criss-cross pattern, the Broadmoor Elementary School fourth-grader counted the rotations as she waited for the right moment to make her move. And when the ropes reached their apex, she dashed in, timing it just right and jumping in rhythm with the turns.

So surprised was she that, when the ropes inevitably entangled her, all Chloe could do was laugh excitedly with her friends, moving to take a stab at turning the ropes as another jumper prepared to enter the fray.

Under normal circumstances, the life of a bachelor or bachelorette isn’t without its stresses.

But being auctioned off to the highest bidder for an evening of dancing? Well, that takes things to a whole different level.

As the event organizer of the American Legion Riders Annual Bachelor and Bachelorette Auction and Dance, Johnna Ross sees the anxiety written on the faces of her volunteers every year. They worry about whether or not anyone will bid on them, she said, and how much money they’ll bring in.

As superintendent of schools for Louisburg USD 416, Sharon Zoellner has a job that includes a great many responsibilities.

Right now, however, circumstances have pushed one of those duties to the forefront.

“It is very, very critical for me, as superintendent, to have the community informed,” she said. “One of my goals is to get as much information out as we can.”

Bright and early Saturday morning a customer and his toddler waited outside of Movie Gallery.

The Osawatomie resident, who preferred not to be named, said he works in Louisburg and has been a customer at Movie Gallery for the last six months.

“He loves scary movies,” he said of his child, who also waited impatiently for the doors to open.

Tara Nolan remembers standing in her living room one summer night in 2007, watching the news about Kelsey Smith.

The Louisburg High School senior said she was about 15 and so excited at the idea of being be able to go to the mall on her own — but “not after that. It was scary.”

Kelsey Smith, who had just graduated from high school, was abducted from a store parking lot on June 2, 2007. Her body was found several days later near a wooded area by Longview Lake in Missouri. She was 18.
