One day he may weigh between 450 to 550 pounds, but for now the new resident at Cedar Cove Feline Conservatory and Education Center weighs about 100.
Tonka, the six month old lion cub, arrived just more than a week ago and has been getting used to his new home. Larry Fries, president of Cedar Cove, said Tonka will officially be introduced to the public in April as part of a spring opening, but visitors can still request to see him now. “I’ve already gotten quite a few requests so far,” Fries said. Lions, which typically populate regions in Africa and areas in India, can also tolerate colder weather, Fries added. Since Tonka is still young, Fries said depending on the weather the cat will roam outside during the day and be kept indoors at night until his habitat is ready and the weather warms up. Tonka’s new home will be about three acres at the conservatory, where two other tigers once roamed. In May, Fries said a female lioness will be introduced at Cedar Cove, as well. She will be about three months of age when she arrives and Fries added she and Tonka will be paired together. Lions are usually very social mammals that stay in groups called prides, which include members of related females, offspring and a few males. For now, Tonka will wait for his friend and get acquainted with the other members of Cedar Cove.
