Molly Winter has seen how willing Miami County residents are to give of themselves to those in need.

As marketing coordinator for Peoples Bank, she helped publicize the organization’s efforts in the wake of the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina. The 15 branches spread throughout Northeast Kansas and New Mexico — including one right here in Louisburg — raising more than $60,000 for the relief efforts of the American Red Cross.
It happened again in 2007, during the Osawatomie floods. Miami County residents once again answered the call, through Peoples Bank and other organizations, this time for a cause that hit much more close to home.

So when word began to spread that an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale had devestated Haiti, Winter knew Peoples Bank would once again do what they could to lend support. But would residents of Miami County, and all of Northeast Kansas, once again show a willingness to do the same?

The proof is in the pudding, all $18,681.89 of it.

“It didn’t make a difference,” Winter said, of the beneficiaries residing outside the shores of the United States, in an entirely separate country. “People still supported the cause and it was amazing to see.”

For the past month, all 15 Peoples Bank locations, including the nine in Northeastern Kansas, have been collecting donations from their employees and customers, with the promise the bank would match donations up to $2,500.

With the recession in full swing, people nationwide are finding it tougher to dip into their pockets and give to any cause, no matter how needy. However, Winter and Co. were ecstatic with the sizable donation they were able to gather and present to the American Red Cross.

“It actually exceeded our expectations,” she said. “We were very pleased with the amount we raised.”

“We want to thank everyone who contributed to the cause,” added Jane Blocher, Executive Director of Douglas County Red Cross, in a news release. “We also want to thank Peoples Bank because we can always count on them to help organize a relief effort after a disaster. Their help is very much appreciated.”
