Girls from all over Miami County flocked to Ottawa on Saturday for the Third Annual Prom Boutique at the First United Methodist Church and was sponsored by the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation. A handful of Louisburg, Paola and Osawatomie high school girls all took advantage of browsing the 335 dresses to find one to take home for free. This was the first year the event was opened up to five counties, instead of just Franklin. Lisa Rivers, with the ECKAN Ottawa Volunteer Center, said it all started with the donation of just 25 dresses and has grown from there. The event featured Mary Kay consultants, local flower shops, hair salon stylists and a free alteration service to help make one night very special for many. Rivers said she hopes to have more businesses participate in the years to come so girls won’t have to travel to Ottawa if they end up winning a door prize or gift certificate. “It’s a community supported event,” Rivers said, “for all surrounding counties, too.” Around 100 girls attended the event, with 55 of them waiting at the doors to the church at 10 a.m. Comment cards were out for the girls to leave suggestions or praise the boutique and Louisburg High School senior Caitlynn Adams wrote she had fun and that she absolutely loved the dress she found. Several girls agreed it was an excellent idea and they were shocked to find out everything was free. “I like that it breaks down all barriers between girls, and between girls and their moms,” Rivers said. “It takes something stressful and makes it fun.” Although Jasmine Phillips and Amanda Egger from West Franklin High School in Pomona had already found dresses, the two kept trying them on just for fun. “I love the fact that we can get a dress for free — it’s just amazing,” Phillips said.
