Sure, the members of local Girl Scout Troop 1241 had been on group outings before.

Short trips to places like Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City or Pomona Lake south of Topeka had proven to be special events, through which the girls have been able to have fun while learning responsibility, said Troop 1241 co-leader Donna Walter.

But when the time came to plan another one, the girls decided to dream big, bandying about destinations such as London and Hawaii, before finally settling on a more practical destination — the bright lights of Hollywood.

Of course, they may have had another motive at play aside from practicality.

“Finally they decided they wanted to go to Hollywood, primarily I think because they want to see Taylor Lautner,” Walter said with a laugh, speaking of the young star of the popular “Twilight” films.

Of course, such a venture won’t come cheap, and this weekend the members of Troop 1241 took a big bite out of the projected costs with a fund-raiser garage sale held at Fox Hall. A packed house Saturday, followed by more modest traffic Sunday, led to the group taking home more than $1,000 for the cause.

They were extremely pleased by the high turnout, Walter said. She herself lives in rural Louisburg, and hasn’t had the best luck with garage sales because of it.
“But doing it in town like this has been really nice,” she said.

Though this venture is still in the planning stages, the troop knows the benefits of such outings first hand. Steffany Aye, mother of troop member Alex Aye, said it gives the girls a chance to see the value of setting, and working towards goals — allowing them to learn responsibility in fun and exciting ways.

For her daughter, however, there’s another more immediate benefit as well.

“I think it’s a great way to meet people,” said Alex, a student at Holy Rosary Wea, of involvement in Girl Scouts. “Since I don’t go to Louisburg schools, I think it’s just fun to meet people I’ll be with in high school.”

Though the particulars have yet to be worked out, one additional element of the trip to the west coast the troop is currently tossing around is the possibility of adding a community service component — finding a way to help each community they visit along the way. The Girl Scouts are no strangers to community service, a statement that holds true in Louisburg as it does wherever the organization operates, and Troop 1241 has completed a number of service projects through the years.

The troop is comprised exclusively of middle-school-aged students, and like many teenagers they sometimes resisted the notion of getting out and doing work. But as members Abby Bair and Jessica Brummel can attest, it didn’t take much for their pre-conceived notions to fall by the wayside.

“I thought, going into it, ‘This is going to suck,’” Bair said, of a recent project at the Louisburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. “But it really ended up being a lot of fun.”

As to when they’ll leave for the Golden State, Walter said, they’re still not sure. It could be this summer, it could be next summer. A lot will depend on when they manage to raise the necessary funds.

But whenever they leave, they know it will be worth the effort. And the girls will be able to take satisfaction in a job well done.

“The older the girls get, they do all of the cooking, they do everything,” Walter said, of the trips. “And it’s really awesome.”
