Bright and early Saturday morning a customer and his toddler waited outside of Movie Gallery. The Osawatomie resident, who preferred not to be named, said he works in Louisburg and has been a customer at Movie Gallery for the last six months. “He loves scary movies,” he said of his child, who also waited impatiently for the doors to open. However, if Louisburg residents want to rent any movies, they’ll have to do so elsewhere. The Louisburg Movie Gallery, 829 W. Amity St., had a “Store Closing” banner up last week, with more than half its stock of movies for sale to the public. Although new releases are still available for rent and not for sale, the store is set to close, leaving only two Redbox locations at McDonald’s and Price Chopper for residents to rent their entertainment. According to the Movie Gallery, Inc., Web site, the company has filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. Representatives from the Louisburg branch declined to comment and refered all media inquires to the Movie Gallery corporate office. No set closing dates have been announced. “It’s a good movie store,” the resident said. “I’m sad to see it go.” The site states the action will enable the company to restructure its debt while continuing to operate its business. It also states the Canadian operations will remain open. The immediate liquidation and closure of 760 Movie Galleries, Hollywood Videos and Game Crazy stores will leave 1,906 stores left open, but the company anticipates closing additional stores during the Chapter 11 process, according to a press release. The release also states the reason for closing particular stores is due to the stores not generating enough revenue to stay operational. You can find which stores are effected at www.moviegallery.com. Based in Wilsonville, Ore., Movie Gallery, Inc., is the second largest North American video and game rental company.
