The focus of Monday night’s Louisburg City Council meeting was on signage throughout the city, which was raised by pastors Donna Voteau of United Methodist Church and Sandy Harris of First Christian Church.

Harris touched on the issue of “snipe” signs west of the city and stated his concerns are with visitors and potential future residents of Louisburg coming to the city and seeing the sign, which displays four of the nine religious organizations in Louisburg.

“I think this is manifestly inequitable and that organizations have a codified right to publicize their presence,” Harris said.

“We depend on people knowing about us. The signs in place are inequitable.”

Harris went on to provide council members choices on what he thinks can be done about the situation, which included the suggestion of a task force being formed to enforce sign regulations.

Voteau approached council members with her concerns of unequal opportunities being given to others concerning signage within the city. She said she has paid a $50 fee in order to put signs up for 21 days out of the year and in the past has been instructed to remove her signs because of a violation of the ordinance.

She proposed to council members that all community churches, instead of each paying an individual amount, could make a one-time payment per year.

“I don’t think of my church any highly than any other church,” she said.

Mayor Curt Shreckengaust said the city’s planning commission will look at the concerns of Voteau and Harris.

“Because this concerns zoning issues, this will go directly to the planning commission,” City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said. “It’s highly inappropriate for city council to make a decision over this.”

He added that when the planning commission had previously discussed the issue, Cantrell said churches may have been overlooked.

Shreckengaust said he is satisfied with the enforcement of sign ordinances within the city.

Council members, at Monday’s meeting, also:

Unanimously passed the user fees for the city swimming pool. They will remain unchanged from the previous year, and the pool season will be shortened to coincide with the first day of school.

Unanimously passed a proposal from WKT Communications, Inc., for an updated phone system in City Hall, which would cost $4,850.10.

Unanimously proclaimed that the month of February will be recognized within the city as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
