Will Barkis, a 1997 graduate of Louisburg High School, was granted his Ph.D. in neurosciences June 25 from the University of California at San Diego. Barkis graduated from Stanford University in 2001 and traveled through Central America, South America and Europe. His research in the lab of professor Marla Feller focused on the development of brain circuitry and the cellular mechanisms that regulate the proper balance of excitatory and inhibitory neural activity. He is submitting the research for publication. Barkis’ extended family attended his presentation in San Diego, which was followed by a reception at the Salk Institute. He is the son of Marvin and Kay Barkis of rural Louisburg.
