The Louisburg-based G.R.A.D.E. Foundation was recently the recipient of a $3,000 grant from the Assists Foundation, a foundation founded by Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self and his family. The G.R.A.D.E. Foundation is utilizing the grant money to fulfill its 1,000 clothes for 1,000 kids project that it committed to for 2009. The project will provide more than 1,000 pieces of clothing to more than 1,000 underprivileged children throughout Kansas and Missouri. The grant money is being used to procure clothing items such as jeans, shoes, shirts, underwear, socks, etc., for children up to 18 years old, said G.R.A.D.E. Foundation director and founder Chad Mathis. “From my perspective, I feel so blessed that the Assists Foundation thought highly enough of the G.R.A.D.E. Foundation to provide this grant. I think it is a great testament to Bill Self, his family, and the Assists Team that they provide such dedication and unending support to our communities and its children,” Mathis said. “They represent a perfect model for what philanthropy is all about and it shows how special and caring they are as individuals.” The Assists Foundation’s mission is to help provide young people access to better lives by identifying areas of need and working with other community based institutions to provide creative and lasting solutions. Mathis created the G.R.A.D.E. (Giving Resources for Adolescent Development and Enrichment) Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit, in 2005 with a mission to protect and enhance the needs of the underprivileged children of Kansas and Missouri by providing the resources and attention necessary to ensure the basic requirements of an enriched childhood. By providing the clothing to the child as a basic staple, it will allow the child to stop worrying about basic foundational needs and allow the child to focus on other positive opportunities that surround them, Mathis said. “In regards to the G.R.A.D.E. Foundation, I feel that it has allowed my wife, children, and I to reach and help more children than we ever thought possible. In four years, our foundation has helped over 5,000 children to date, thanks to our donors,” Mathis said. “With this generous grant, we will now be able to reach out to so many more children. I am so proud of the foundation’s accomplishments to date, but I now know that our mission is just beginning and the potential to help others is growing exponentially every day.” Other programs created by the G.R.A.D.E. Foundation include the Shoes for Kids program, school backpack project, memorial scholarship program and the Miami County/Osawatomie Golf for Kids summer program. Programs the foundation has supported include Louisburg USD 416, Osawatomie USD 367, My Father’s House in Paola and Missouri Girls and Boys Town.
