Fireworks, apple pie and family fun are set for this weekend.

Louisburg’s annual Freedom Fest celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Lewis-Young Park.

Planned activities include a kiddie tractor pull, an apple pie contest, a dog-kissing contest, a walk-in hot-air balloon, inflatables, music, food and more. There will be a flyover, and once darkness hits, the annual fireworks show will begin.

This year’s celebration features a revamped stage show with emcee Craig Holtzen and BJ the DJ entertaining the crowd.

Olive’s Hope animal rescue group will take center stage Saturday night; public officials have volunteered their lips to participate in the group’s dog-kissing contest, featuring the ugliest, but most kissable, dog, Olive. Several local officials — including Mayor Curt Shreckengaust, Kansas Rep. Jene Vickrey, Police Chief Ron Anderson and several Louisburg City Council members — will be in the running to kiss the rescue group’s namesake.

Members of the public will be able to purchase votes for the person they would like to see kiss Olive.

“We’ll make sure she kisses them, too, even if it takes ice cream on the face or chicken nuggets over the ears,” said Carolyn Karns, an Olive’s Hope co-organizer.

Back by popular demand is the contest to see who can bake the best apple pie in Louisburg.

There is no entry fee, but only homemade pies will be accepted. The pie filling must be made of mostly apples, but other ingredients are acceptable. Contestants must be between 14 and 114 to be eligible.

Pies should be checked in between 7 and 7:30 p.m. and should arrive in ready-to-eat condition, wrapped or covered in a nonreturnable pie pan. No names or identification should be on the pie or tin.

Pies are judged on taste, texture and appearance. Ribbons will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners, and the best bakers receive official bragging rights.

Money raised by auctioning off the pies will benefit the Miami County Cancer Foundation.

At dark, the city’s fireworks show will commence, so be sure to bring a lawn chair.

Free-will donations will be accepted at the gate, and other donations can be sent to the Freedom Fund, City of Louisburg, 5 S. Peoria St., Suite 102, Louisburg, KS 66053.
