It’s there for anyone who needs it — no proof of eligibility required.

And it’s a service organizers say is essential in Louisburg during a time when the economy is tougher than it has been in recent years.

On the first and third Fridays of each month, Harvesters Community Food Network and Cross Point Assembly of God Church in Paola team up to bring a free food distribution to Louisburg for senior citizens, families and other residents who need a little help.

“There’s too many people that do not have the gas, that don’t want to drive to Paola, or they can’t get to Paola,” organizer Randy Schull said.

About three months ago, Schull and co-organizer Jim Chester began bringing the food to help Louisburg residents. The food is distributed at Louisburg Senior Center to anyone who signs up.

“Everybody’s so thankful, because it’s nice (food),” Center Director Beverly Steger said.

On Friday, volunteers ran in and out of the back room of the building, organizing the food given out that day. Macaroni and cheese, cereal, cans of beans, bread donated by Price Chopper, fresh strawberries and apples, Jell-O snack cups and dessert items, just to name a few.

Schull said there are 83 families signed up for the Harvesters program in Louisburg, which originally started as a distribution at Wea Creek Apartments.

“Two weeks at Wea Creek, and we outgrew it,” he said.

The 83 families constitute about 200 individuals served at the Louisburg distribution point, Schull said. The only requirement for families of individuals to participate is that they sign up with the senior center, which can be done on distribution day. Otherwise, there are not financial requirements.

“As long as we have the food, we’ll be here,” Schull said. “It may not be much, but it’ll be plenty.”
