Now that not wearing your seatbelt is a primary charge, will that change whether or not you will wear a seat belt?

Economy sure hitting close to home PDF Print E-mail

The worsening economy has finally hit close to home. Three people were laid off this week in my department at the trade publication in which I work. It was not a fun week. We will have gone from a department of seven to four by the end of this month.

What really makes these layoffs difficult is two of the artists have been with the company for 22 and 13 years. That’s a long time. I’ve been with the company for 17 years. When you’ve worked with someone that long, you’re more than just co-workers.

The publishing industry is one of many areas being hit really hard in this economy mess. Doug and I are keeping our fingers crossed we still have jobs in two years. I know we’re not the only ones out there who are wondering if their jobs are secure. Every time I hear of another Sprint layoff, I wonder if it will be anyone I know. So many Sprint employees call Louisburg home. It’s definitely a scary time.

I guess I’m a pessimist, but I think it’s going to take quite a while for the economy to rebound. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Herald’s Web site poll last week, you missed your opportunity to vote on which way you think the economy is headed. The poll asked how long it will take the economy to bounce back. The choices were six months, one year, two years, before the end of President Obama’s term or more than five years. I’m voting for two years. I don’t think we’ve seen the worst yet.

It’s especially troublesome for parents of high school juniors and seniors or those with children in college. How do you help steer your youngster in a promising career path? My mom recently told me my nephew, a high school junior, might be interested in journalism. I called my big brother that night and told him to tell Chance to pick any major but journalism.

Kinsey hasn’t decided what field she might want to pursue after high school graduation. I know she’s not really interested in the medical field, but I told her that’s probably the only guaranteed job right now. With all us boomers getting older by the minute, we’re going to require lots of medical attention as we age. (Boy, isn’t that a comforting thought.)

But it even looks as if hospitals aren’t immune to the pink slips. A story in this week’s business section of the Star said hospitals are beginning to feel the effects of the economy and are struggling with more patients who can’t pay bills and dwindling government money.
My favorite checker at the grocery store said her company recently laid off several employees. Each week at church, there are prayers for those facing a possible layoff.

Have you been laid off? Are you afraid you’ll be laid off? I’ll bet there is someone out there with good advice for anyone facing such a situation. I invite you to check out my blog on the Herald Web site this week. I talked about my office’s layoffs. Maybe you’d like to share your story. Tell me how long you think it will be before our economy starts climbing up out of the deep hole we’ve dug. I’ll try to check back often this week and see if anyone has anything to share.

I think I’ll do my part to help the economy and buy some muffins to take to work this morning. At least it will make my tummy feel good.
