The whine of a four-wheeler and shouts of delight carried on the wind across the open field. February ended on a blustery note, but not before Louisburg residents had a chance to enjoy a late-season snowfall that dumped about five inches of powder on the community Saturday. “My face feels purple,” C.J. Barker said. He swiped a gloved hand at the snow matted to his eyelashes. “That was fun.” The 9-year-old Louisburg boy watched his father, David Barker, towing his 5-year-old brother, Aiden, in a small inner tube around the snow-covered field at the corner of Sutherland Drive and South 13th Street. “You have to sit criss-cross applesauce,” C.J. explained about the proper way to sit in the inner tube to get maximum enjoyment out of the ride. “If you hold out your legs, it slows you down.” Across town, standing near the wooded bank of Rabbit Creek, Leslie Jackson laughed at the sight of her daughters, Glynnis, 12, and Alexis, 15, careening down a steep hill toward her. “We’re just out making the most out of what will probably be the last good snowfall of the season,” Jackson said. Glynnis slid to a stop near her mother’s feet, followed closely by Alexis. “Let’s go again,” Glynnis said as she picked up her green sled and trudged up the hill. As Jackson watched her daughters climb the hill, she made a passing comment about layoffs at her workplace. But on this Saturday afternoon, she was enjoying a brief respite from the economy. “We’re having a great time.”
