Louisburg City Council members on Monday night got an honest opinion of visitors’ first impressions of the city.

Four members of the Southeast Kansas Regional Leadership Academy spent about five hours in the community earlier this year, and they presented their findings Monday night.

The resounding conclusion: “You have a lot of pride in your community,” said Mike Waldman, a member of the group who visited the city.

Welcoming signage, pristine residential neighborhoods, up-to-date schools and a beautiful city lake were several of the things that stood out to the group.

“Your school campuses are unreal ... beautiful, unreal, nice structures,” Waldman told community members.

Factors the group said weren’t as positive about the community were few and far between.

The lack of signs welcoming visitors on the south and east sides of the community, and the numerous nonconforming civic signs at the west entrance of the community were of concern.

Also of concern was the difficulty a visitor could have in finding city hall and the chamber of commerce.

“We had no idea where the city building was, no idea where the chamber was,” Waldman said.

Overall, the group members said Louisburg was one of the easiest communities to evaluate, and city council members largely agreed with the group’s assessment.

“This presentation kind of validated what we’ve been trying to accomplish the past several years,” Mayor Arlen Thompson said.
