Deborah Blancarte, who recently resigned as principal of Louisburg’s Broadmoor Elementary while facing a felony drug charge, now will see that charge dropped if she can successfully complete an 18-month diversion program. Blancarte originally faced two felony drug charges, but prosecutors modified the accusations to one count of conspiracy to possess hydrocodone. According to court documents describing the modified charge, Blancarte unlawfully conspired with another to possess a quantity of the pain killer hydrocodone. She did so by asking the person to obtain a hydrocodone prescription for Blancarte’s personal use. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, but instead, a diversion agreement was reached, Miami County Attorney David L. Miller said. As part of the program, Blancarte must have a substance abuse evaluation to determine what type of treatment is needed, and she must pay costs and fees related to the diversion, Miller said. “It will be monitored by us and assessment services in Johnson County,” Miller said. Diversion programs typically are reached in cases involving defendants with no criminal history, which was the case with Blancarte, Miller said.

Finally, that part is over. She is guilty of the charges and she will get what she needs, the which is help and treatment. Now, it is time for the school board and Dr Doll to admit their mistake and get some help and develop standards and practices to prevent something like this to happen again. Felony charges should equal leave of absence with or without pay. If this problem would have been handle properly, there would never have been an uproar. Being open and honest should have been the policy from the beginning not a cover up.
