The newly formed Miami County Cancer Foundation is making strides toward developing resources and a core group of volunteers, but the agency is still likely a couple months from helping cancer patients and their families. A group of people interested in the project met Feb. 2 at Cathy Leaver’s American Family Insurance office in Paola. Leaver said the group passed the foundation’s bylaws and created a board of directors with nine members. Leroy Elliott is the president, and Leaver is the vice president. Leaver said the group is still in the process of getting all the paperwork complete to officially create the non-profit foundation, but volunteers are already in the process of planning fund-raisers. The group would like to raise enough money to get all the paperwork finalized before they open their doors to cancer patients, and donations are currently being accepted. Leaver said the volunteers hope the foundation will be able to provide all types of assistance, from gas and food cards to medical equipment. Anyone interested in learning more about the new group, or who would like to make a donation, may visit Leaver’s office at 210 N. Hospital Drive or call her at (913) 294-3203.
