Jene Vickrey looked relaxed in his gray sweatshirt and blue jeans as he strolled around the Louisburg Middle School gym Saturday night during the school’s Bingo Night fund-raiser.
The Louisburg Republican likely was not so relaxed Monday morning when he donned his suit and tie and entered the budget fracas in Topeka. The nine-term state representative said Saturday cuts in state aid to K-12 public education are inevitable this year.
“We will have to make budget cuts this year, but I hope we can keep it at a manageable level to give school districts time to prepare for next year,” Rep. Vickrey said. “The cuts will be more severe next year.”
The 2009-10 school year begins July 1.
As for this budget year, Vickrey said it will be difficult for districts to make cuts because teachers and services are already under contract for 2008-09. “That doesn’t give schools much room to cut.”
Vickrey is one of the legislators who have been invited to talk about state budget cuts and other issues affecting area residents this year as the annual legislative breakfast series kicks off at 7 a.m. Saturday at Louisburg High School, 202 Aquatic Drive.
Other lawmakers invited to speak include Sens. Pat Apple, Louisburg Republican, and Karin Brownlee, Olathe Republican, and Rep. Bill Feuerborn, Garnett Democrat, The event is free and open to the public, who will be invited to right down their questions for the legislators.
Chris Cakes will cater the breakfast.
