After a string of grass and brush fires over the weekend, Louisburg Fire Chief Paul Richards wants to remind residents to be cognizant of weather conditions when they burn their grass and brush.

“The grass is very dry, so people shouldn’t be burning,” Richards said.

The Louisburg Fire Department responded to seven grass and brush fires from Friday through Sunday.

“Saturday and Sunday were really too windy, and that was the biggest thing,” Richards said. “A couple of them probably started with brush fires that maybe burned three days ago, but the coals were still in  the ground and blew embers over in the grass.”

Richards said residents must possess a permit to burn brush and grass, but he encourages people to wait for optimal conditions.

“Wait until we get some rain,” he said.
