Girls' late comeback not enough to overturn Gardner PDF Print E-mail

If the Louisburg girls’ basketball team didn’t believe coach Terry Tinich’s sermon of having to play four quarters before Friday’s home game with Gardner-Edgerton, the Wildcats certainly do now.

Minus the first quarter, the Wildcats went toe-to-toe with the Blazers, but it was the opening frame that did in the Wildcats. In fact, there is a circle under the first quarter in the scorebook to serve as a reminder — literally.

Gardner held previously unbeaten Louisburg scoreless in the first quarter and jumped out to an 11-point lead in the second quarter. The Wildcats clawed their way back in it, but the Blazers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 38-26 win in the Wildcats’ Frontier League opener.

“There isn’t just one thing I can pinpoint to say why we lost this game,” Tinich said. “We did several things wrong, and for some reason, we didn’t come ready to play. I am not sure why because this was a big game for us as far as league goes. I have to take 95 percent of the blame for this because I didn’t have the girls prepared enough.”

The 26-point output for the Wildcats is a season low, but what is more head-scratching is that the girls just put their name in the team record books for points scored in a game after they scored 90 against Atchison in their previous contest.

Louisburg shot just 5 for 31 for the game, and without several free throws down the stretch, the Wildcats would have been in even bigger trouble.

“We obviously didn’t shoot well at all,” Tinich said. “I am not sure why. I guess it just wasn’t our night. This is definitely a learning experience for us, and we have to move on.”

Senior Abbey Frazier led the Wildcats with seven points, while juniors Taylor Brown and Mandy Mulich scored six points a piece.

Despite a horrific start for Louisburg, which didn’t score its first point until the 7 minute, 9 second mark of the second quarter and its first basket three minutes after that, the Wildcats were still in the game heading into the fourth quarter.

After they trailed 21-8 at halftime, the Wildcats made a mini-rally. A Gardner player was called for a technical foul after she fouled Frazier while going up for a shot.

Three made free throws, and a 3-pointer from Mulich later, Louisburg trimmed Gardner’s lead to 23-16 and trailed 25-20 going into the fourth quarter.
“We obviously played a lot better in the second half, and we played better defense,” Tinich said. “That was the big key for us. In that first quarter, we let Gardner do what they wanted, but we got tougher as the game went on. We just couldn’t keep it going.”

Gardner got a jump start at the beginning of the fourth with a 10-3 run, and the Wildcats could get no closer. Despite losing their first game of the season, Tinich knows there are plenty of special moments left for his team.

“We knew going into the season that it would be almost impossible to win every game,” he said. “This is just one of the losses, and we have to learn from this. We still have a lot of games left and anything can happen, as far as the league goes. We just have to do our part and that is win.”

Andy, I think you do a great job of coverage for the Louisburg sports teams, outstanding actually. However, Could we see the results of our JV and freshman teams as well? A little blurb about them would be welcome. The Freshman Girls were the only team to post a win on Friday.

Thank you,
