The irony is not lost on most readers that in a year when the economy went sour, construction projects dominated the headlines in Louisburg. A new Rockville Elementary School and a renovated Wildcat Stadium and Louisburg Police Station were among the most recent accomplishments to dot the city’s landscape. Street repairs and work to build a new water plant also highlight the list of Louisburg projects underway in 2008. Money for most of these projects was approved and locked in at favorable rates before the economic slide that drained people’s 401(k)s and put a crimp in the flow of capital to big and small businesses across the country. The bleak economy probably had much to do with voters rejecting a bond proposal in November to build a new library. And the continuing economic crisis likely will put the state Legislature in the unenviable position of having to slash funding for some state programs in the coming year — cuts that could ultimately have a ripple effect across our education system, a cornerstone of this state’s future. One of the bright spots in this time of economic uncertainty is the drop in gasoline prices from $4.10 per gallon in July to about $1.40 per gallon in the waning days of 2008. This sharp decline has helped make the economic crunch slightly more bearable for thousands of Kansans. Sadly, the decline in fuel costs will not be enough to keep some people from experiencing hardships in 2009. Fortunately, as we’ve witnessed with yet another record bell-ringing collection for the Salvation Army and other numerous acts of kindness and support this holiday season, Louisburg is a town that takes care of its residents and will push ahead in the hope of a brighter 2009.
