After a three-month campaign push, year-long planning process and years more of hoping, Louisburg Library District No. 1, Miami County, found out voters in Louisburg weren’t yet ready to invest in a new facility. The library district put a $6.985 million bond issue in front of voters on Nov. 4, and those casting ballots defeated the measure by 8 percentage points.

For years, library staff have been making do with the space they have, and in 2003, the current building went under a renovation to maximize the space it does have. But a drastic increase in circulation seen by library staff through the past several years spurred the need to put the bond issue to voters this year, with the hope of building a new facility on library-owned land between Harvest and Aquatic drives.

After learning of the vote’s results, Library Director Kiersten Allen said she was encouraged by the turnout, but the library would have to start making tough decisions in the near future.

“We’re going to have to make some difficult decisions space-wise and with our collection,” Allen said. “We’ll do the best with what we have, which is what we’ve been doing for several years. And we’ll continue to serve our patrons.”

The next steps, Allen said, are up to the library’s board of trustees. They will decide if and when to put the bond issue back to voters.

It would have really been nice to have a nice facility for our children. Maybe next time.
