Though few homes in the community still used its cable services, the impact of Rapid Communication’s decision to cease service in Louisburg rippled through the town in late August.

Worsening the situation, Rapid gave its local customers little notice of its decision, leaving many without television service and the decision whether to switch to satellite or purchase a digital TV receiver in anticipation of the coming transition to all-digital airwaves.

“The only reason we made the decision to pull out of (Louisburg) is strictly economics,” said Ron Page, general manager for Rapid’s central region, just after the company left Louisburg. “It wasn’t feasibly economically responsible to continue running an operation in the negative.”

Rapid inherited the cable system installed in Louisburg in the 1970s, which had been transferred several times from company to company, without much maintenance.

Because of that, and the low number of customers in Louisburg, Page said the decision to leave was the only logical one his company could come to.
