A longstanding tradition of having Santa Claus make the trek from the North Pole to Louisburg’s West Gym for the annual Mayor’s Christmas tree lighting was nowhere to be found in 2008. Rather, the Louisburg Rotary Club saw an opportunity to work with the city to build a shelterhouse at City Lake and organize the first annual Miracle on Metcalf: Candy Cane Lane celebration.

Hundreds of volunteer hours went into the planning of the project, supported by many local businesses, churches, organizations and individuals. Businesses donated labor hours and materials to get the shelterhouse built, and others donated money to sponsor recycled plastic benches for patrons to sit at while enjoying the holiday cheer.

The planning paid off Dec. 5, when Santa rode in on a Louisburg fire truck to greet an estimated 700 people for the first Candy Cane Lane event. Photographer Kathy Fitzke and her staff took photos with Santa and by the lake, and hot dogs, hot cocoa and apple cider were provided free of charge.

The church community came together for a live nativity scene featuring a horse, goat and sheep, and children of The Lake subdivision sang carols to those who chose to take a stroll around the lake to see the luminaries and houses decorated in Christmas lights.

Organizer Sue Knop said the Rotary Club considered the event a success and plans a bigger, better celebration in 2009.
