It wasn’t perfect by any means, but Louisburg coach Terry Tinich will take it. No question.

The Louisburg girls’ basketball team completed its season before the holiday break with a 48-32 home victory Friday over Wellsville and did it in dominating fashion. The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-0 run in the first quarter and never looked back.

But that didn’t stop Wellsville’s Madison Chambers from making it difficult on Louisburg. Chambers scored a game-high 20 points and helped cut the Wildcat lead to 12 points at one point in the second half.

“We played well at times, but Wellsville is a scrappy team,” Tinich said. “They really take you out of your comfort zone. Wellsville is always going to play hard and we knew that. Chambers is a heck of a player and we had a hand in her face all night and she was still able to score.”

Despite her 20 points, Louisburg guards Laurissa Beckman and Mandy Mulich each took turns guarding the Wellsville scorer, but at times didn’t get the help they needed and Tinich let his team know about it at halftime.

“We talked at halftime and Mandy and Laurissa were working their tails off against Chambers and no one was helping,” Tinich said. “I just kind of jumped the rest of the team’s butts at halftime and told them they can’t take a nap while those other two are working their tails off.”

The message must have been heard loud and clear because the Wildcats (5-0) held the Eagles to just four points in the third quarter and allowed Tinich to empty his bench midway through the fourth quarter.

Senior Abbey Frazier led the Wildcats in scoring once again with 15 points, including nine points during the team’s 11-0 run to start the game. Fellow senior Katelynn O’Hara finished with nine points and junior Taylor Brown added seven.

The Eagles were able to close the margin some in the fourth quarter, and although the Wildcats won, Tinich doesn’t want to see a team hang around.

“We are not going to hold anything back, but we need to get that killer instinct going for when we play the Gardners and the Paolas,” Tinich said. “We just don’t have that right now.”

The killer instinct is one of the many things Tinich hopes to work with his team on during the holiday break. The Wildcats will get two tough tests when they return from break.

Louisburg travels to Atchison on Jan. 5 and hosts Gardner-Edgerton on Jan. 9 in what will be a key game for Frontier League title.

“We played a good game (Thursday),” Tinich said. “A win is a win, even if they are ugly. We have some things we have to work on over break. We have Atchison then Gardner, and I think Gardner is very beatable after watching them the other night. We just have to keep working.”

Junior varsity

Just like the varsity, the Louisburg junior varsity girls’ squad had no problem with Wellsville on Friday at home.
The Wildcats rolled to a 46-11 victory including a 14-0 run to start the first quarter. It was never in doubt.

“We suited up 14 girls and 12 of them scored,” JV coach Jarrod Worthington said. “The two that did not, ended up with several steals, rebounds and assists. So it was very clear that each girl made a huge contribution.

“It was a lot of fun watching the girls share the basketball so well. I know that we are only two games in, but I get the feeling that this is another hard-working, unselfish team. We obviously have to keep improving, but I like what I see so far.”

Emily Lemke led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points and Jordan Shearer finished with seven.
