Several local families will be celebrating Christmas early this weekend, as local volunteers prepare to deliver gifts donated to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office’s Angel Tree program. With the economy hurting, the need for donations to the program was greater than ever this year. Volunteer Brenda Leinweber said Monday that 522 angels were signed up this year, topping last year’s tally of 453. Not all of the angels were adopted this year, and volunteers used money raised during the Cops for Tots auction earlier this year to buy presents over the weekend for 61 angels who were not adopted. Volunteers will again help out Saturday morning, when the wrapped gifts will be delivered to families throughout Miami County. Leinweber said she saw several new families this year requesting help from the program. Even after Saturday’s event, Cops for Tots still accepts donations to help children in need. For more information, contact the Miami County Sheriff’s Office at (913) 294-3232 or stop by the office at 118 S. Pearl St., Paola.
