Eighth grade takes fourth

The Frontier League tournament couldn’t have started much better for the Louisburg eighth-grade girls’ basketball team.

The No. 5 Wildcats upended rival Paola on Thursday in Paola, which was seeded fourth, 41-31, and had all the momentum heading into their game with No. 1 seed Baldwin. Unfortunately for Louisburg, however, it would be its last win on the season.

Louisburg had trouble with No. 1 Baldwin in the semifinals in Ottawa with a 42-26 loss and the games didn’t get easier when it met No. 2 seed Pioneer Ridge in the third-place game. The Wildcats fell 31-23 despite staying even with Ridge for most of the game.

The Wildcats ended the year with a 4-6 record under coach Bernadette Stevens.

Against Paola, Louisburg had the Panthers on the ropes from the start. The Wildcats got out to a quick start and eventually took a 10-point halftime lead.

Paola trimmed the lead to three at the end of the third quarter, but Louisburg pulled away for the final time in the 10-point win.

Louisburg gave Baldwin fits in the first half of the semifinal game and actually had an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats trailed by just five points at halftime, but Baldwin outscored Louisburg 15-6 in the third to put the game away.

Later in the day, the Wildcats had intentions of upsetting Pioneer Ridge to take third place. Louisburg took a 7-4 lead in the first quarter and the game was tied at 13-all at halftime.

With the game tied at 20 in the fourth quarter, Pioneer Ridge pulled away on an 11-3 run to secure the win.

Members of the fourth-place Wildcat team are Bailey Aiken, Brook Vaughan, Jaden Scott, Sydnie Bubien, Erin Davis, Chelsea Fleming, Anna Bell, Clara Littrell, Addie Vance, Karlie Stuteville and Nicole Smith.
