EUDORA — Bryce Hood found himself one victory away from winning one of the biggest meets of the season — the Eudora Tournament of Champions.

The Louisburg junior faced off with Paola’s Sharky Slyter in the 130-pound championship match after winning five straight to start the tournament. But Hood couldn’t come up with victory No. 6.

Slyter defeated Hood in a 5-1 decision in the title match and gave Louisburg’s top wrestler his first loss of the season Saturday at Eudora High School. Louisburg finished 21st overall with 78.5 points.

Hood was just one of two Wildcat wrestlers to reach the second day of wrestling. Sophomore heavyweight Tyler Ewy joined Hood in the championship round, and he finished fourth overall with a 3-3 record on the tournament.

The Wildcats sent eight wrestlers to the tournament but were bitten by the injury bug on Friday. Seniors Michael Kircher (140) and Marcus Kasitz (145) both had to end their day early thanks to injuries.

Kircher won his opening match on the day, but lost his final two and received a gash above his eye toward the end of Friday. At 160 pounds, Mason Whaley just missed out on bracket action with a 2-2 record, while Derek Symes (171) went 1-3.

Alex Gentges (189) and Brock Elliott (215) went 0-3 and 2-3, respectively, on Friday.

To start round robin action on Friday, Hood opened with a pin of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Tommy Keeams, then recorded a technical fall over Spring Hill’s Austin Adkins. Hood then pinned Rossville’s Kiefer Hurla to earn the No. 2 seed in bracket action on Saturday.

Hood defeated Holton’s Kane Lovvorn in an 11-6 decision in the first round of the bracket and later pinned Chanute’s Adam Leedy in the third period to set up the championship dual with Slyter.

In the heavyweight division, Ewy opened Friday with a 9-3 win over Spring Hill’s Jesse Sloan, but was later pinned by Sumner Academy’s Sharrone Berry. Ewy pinned Chanute’s Jacob LaRue in the final round robin match.

Ewy fell 5-1 to Lansing’s Zach Hammer to start bracket play, but got revenge on Berry in the consolation semifinals with a pin of his own. The Wildcat sophomore lost a close third-place match to Lawrence Free State’s Ammon Austin in a 3-2 decision.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday when they travel to the Tonganoxie Invitational. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.

Junior varsity

The Louisburg junior varsity wrestling squad traveled to Topeka for the Shawnee Heights Invitational and placed ninth out of 18 teams.

However, the Wildcats walked away with four champions in the process.

Austin Caskey (135), Jeremy Olson (160), Chad Turney (171) and Aaron DeCaule (189) all took home first place honors, while Trevor LaPlant (119) and Luke Hudgins (152) finished second.

Brett Herbert (130), Nathan Phillips (285) and Josh Dollard (285) each finished third.
