Louisburg city staff is one person smaller this week after staff received notice Planning and Zoning Director Bill Schrandt plans to retire this month.

Schrandt, who has served as Louisburg’s director of building and zoning for six years, submitted his resignation letter to the city Friday, indicating his plans to retire.

City Administrator Jeff  Cantrell said Schrandt’s official last day is Dec. 27, but Schrandt will not be returning to city offices before that date.

Schrandt was unable to be reached for comment.

“The city wishes him well and appreciates his previous contributions to the city,” Cantrell said.

Schrandt’s departure leaves an opening in the building and zoning department, a spot Cantrell said will not be immediately filled.

“Existing staff will perform the director’s duties until such time that the market warrants additional staffing measures,” Cantrell said.

A slowdown in new housing and commercial building due to the poor economy prompted the decision to not fill the position, Cantrell said.

I always loved talking with this guy. He would tell you exactly what was going on in town and why certain projects were put on hold while others were pursued. An honest man, he will be missed.
