Jo Ann Gangel greeted shoppers Saturday afternoon as they filed in and out of Louisburg Price Chopper, some stopping to deposit coins and bills in the little red bucket.

Gangel, a 12-year-member of the Louisburg Lions Club, has been ringing the bell for the Salvation Army since the club took over the fund-raising effort in 2000.

“I enjoy seeing all the people,” said Gangel, a Louisburg native. “We have a lot of new residents, but I know a lot of them, too. I like doing this because I know the money stays in the community.”

Sylvia Bostick, who organizes the bell-ringing campaign each year for the Lions Club, said the bell ringers are on pace to break last year’s fund-raising total.

“We are running a little ahead of last year at the same time,” Bostick said. “We will be ringing a total of 284 hours this year, which is a few more hours than last year’s 243 hours. Our total last year was $10,000.24, and we are hoping to exceed that amount this year.”

On Saturday, Gangel positioned herself inside the supermarket’s sliding doors to ward off the ferocious wind bracing shoppers as they scurried across the parking lot.

“It stays busy. You can’t count to 10 before those doors are opening,” Gangel said of the Price Chopper location. “I love it when the kids stop to put money in (the bucket). We give them a Tootsie Roll as a treat.

“Some people stop every time they come into the store,” she said. “I tell them they don’t have to give every time they go past me, but some just want to. This is a very giving community.”

Bostick agreed Louisburg residents have been charitable through the years.

“I believe we have beat the previous year’s total every year so far,” Bostick said. “This is the best community to live in, and the people are so generous. Now, more than ever, the Salvation Army will be called upon for help, and it is nice to know that the money placed in our bucket will stay to help people in our own community.”
