Gail Aita didn’t think it a stretch to buy a giraffe purse as a Christmas gift Saturday morning.

The Lenexa woman found herself among a throng of holiday shoppers looking for the fashionable accessory this season. Her daughter, Jenny DuBois of Louisburg, also planned to snatch up one of the purses. The two women and Aita’s daughter-in-law, Ruth Moritz of Roeland Park, were looking for items to check off their Christmas lists at the daylong Holiday Mart at Louisburg Middle School. The LMS Parent-Teacher-Student organization-sponsored event attracted dozens of vendors and hundreds of shoppers to the school Saturday.

The annual shoppers’ paradise featured a plethora of holiday knickknacks, decor, jewelry, apparel, accessories, coffees, confections and other items.

Angela Cramer, who sold Aita and DuBois their giraffe purses, said she had been pleased with the amount of jewelry, purses and wallets she had sold by midday.

The Bonner Springs entrepreneur was making her first appearance at the show, and she vowed to return.

So did first-time exhibitor Kimberly Proctor of Olathe. The owner of Sew Sassy Embroidery only had one lion sleeping bag left at noon, and the show still had four hours to go.

“I’m very pleased with the turnout,” Proctor said.

Twenty-month-old Dakota Cummins’ eyes lit up when his mom, Helen, showed him one of Proctor’s blue towels embroidered with a train.

“We’re out looking for some Christmas gifts. We’re not looking for anything in particular,” James Cummins said as he rested his hands on the handle of Dakota’s stroller. “We have some family members who are kind of hard to shop for, and we’re still looking for gifts for them.”

Mike Martin, owner of 4D Acres emu farm near Louisburg said sales had been brisk Saturday morning.

“Our emu jerky and sausage have been selling well,” Martin said. “I don’t know about the total dollar amount, but I know we’ve made more sales than we did last year. The turnout has been very good. I was so busy I didn’t have a chance to look up all morning.”

The show featured 70 vendors. Overland Park vendor Diane Triano won the raffle for the Nintendo Wii game console.

PTSO organizers were still tabulating the amount of money raised by this year’s show at press time, but the organization was pleased by the number of vendors and shoppers who came to Holiday Mart.

“We had a very good turnout,” said organizer Jenny Diederich. “The vendors were impressed with the number of shoppers and the number of student and parent volunteers. We were very pleased.”
